A Tribute to Smash Up

If you’re anything like us, the thrill of combining unlikely factions—like zombies and ninjas or Giant Ants and Kitty Cats—in Smash Up is a delightful prelude to hilarious chaos around the table. This has been a family favourite of ours since it was published in 2012 by AEG, it’s designed by Paul Peterson. Smash Up is a shuffle‑building card game for 2–4 players. With a playtime of around 45 minutes and super speedy set up, it’s a great after dinner choice. Its rules are deceptively simple—play one action card and one minion card, check control of bases, draw two cards—yet each faction’s unique abilities create endless strategic mash‑ups, and a certain someone in our group always manages to play at least six cards each turn!

Hummus has been a staple in Middle Eastern cuisine for centuries, with the earliest written records of a hummus‑like dish dating back to a 13th‑century Cairo cookbook. Multiple cultures—including Greeks, Arabs, Lebanese, Turks, Syrians, and Egyptians—have laid claim to the original recipe, each adding its own twist to the chickpea purée.

Recipe Inspiration: Smash Up Hummus

Inspired by the game’s titular “smash” mechanic, this hummus recipe transforms the humble chickpea into a creamy dip with a satisfying, yet literal, smash. We blitz canned chickpeas in the food processor with garlic, dried oregano, lemon juice, and a splash of sun‑dried tomato oil until smooth—no tahini needed. The sun‑dried tomatoes add a tangy sweetness that balances the garlic and oregano beautifully.

Pro Tips & Tactics

  • Adjust consistency on the fly: If your hummus seems too thick, simply add a teaspoon of water (or olive oil) at a time until you reach your desired creaminess .
  • Storage: Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days, or freeze in 4‑tablespoon portions for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge and stir in a splash of lemon juice if it dries out .
  • Flavor variations: Swap sun‑dried tomatoes for roasted red peppers, or—if you’re feeling adventurous—add ½ ripe avocado with lime juice and fresh cilantro for a Mexican fusion twist.

Whether you’re a board‑game enthusiast smashing bases or a home cook smashing chickpeas, this dip delivers maximum fun with minimal effort. Chickpeas are not only creamy and delicious but also packed with protein and fiber, making them a nutritious foundation for your next smash‑up snack attack . Enjoy!
